How To Get To The Crown Tundra

Legendary Pokémon are beasts of myth and legend, the greatest and most powerful beings in the games, and in the Crown Tundra, legendary Pokémon seem to be running amuck and unchecked. That's until you show up. There are no fewer than 58 legendary Pokémon that appear in the Pokémon Sword and Shield DLC and it's your job – as ever – to catch 'em all.

In the Crown Tundra, legendary Pokémon can be obtained through a variety of different ways. Some require you to track them or solve puzzles, for others you need to delve deep into a Dynamax Adventure, and some just need you to play through the story. To be honest, some of these Pokémon are impossible to miss, but others have incredibly complex and confusing methods to unlock them.

This guide tells you how to find and catch every legendary Pokémon in the Crown Tundra, so be warned: there are a few spoilers for the story and puzzles that you'll face. There are more in-depth guides for the more complicated puzzles, so we've linked them in each section as well.

Here's all of the Crown Tundra legendary Pokémon:

  • Calyrex
  • Regis and Regigigas
  • Swords of Justice: Terrakion, Cobalion, Virizion, and Keldeo
  • Legendary birds: Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres
  • Every other legendary, including Ultra Beasts

How to catch Calyrex in the Crown Tundra

Calyrex is one of the easiest legendary Pokémon to catch in the Crown Tundra, because it is available just by playing through the story. There are a few different quests and encounters to get through, though, so we'd recommend following our Crown Tundra Calyrex guide for a full run-through.

Our guide also covers how to get Glastrier and Spectrier, which carrots to grow, and where to plant them. Also, if you need to know how to separate Calyrex from its horse using the Reigns of Unity – that's all in there, too.

How to catch the Regis in the Crown Tundra

You'll no doubt have noticed the huge, impressive temples dotted around the Crown Tundra. These are the homes of the legendary giants Regice, Regirock, Registeel, Regidrago, and Regieleki.

To access each Regi, you need to complete a small puzzle for each. Just like when Indiana Jones is trying to get to the Holy Grail in The Last Crusade – these are riddles that test your Pokémon knowledge as well as your critical thinking. However, if you're stuck (or just can't be bothered), head to our guide for all the Regis locations and puzzle solutions.

Of course, we also cover how to catch Regigigas, but you'll only come onto that after catching the five Regis (including a bit of trading with friends).

How to catch Terrakion, Cobalion, Virizion, and Keldeo in the Crown Tundra

This group of Generation V legendary Pokémon are favourites among fans – and for good reason. Known collectively as the Swords of Justice, the beasts are famously inspired by the Three Musketeers and use a host of sword-based moves, making them fearsome foes or strong allies.

You have to talk to Sonia – remember her? – and investigate 150 sets of footprints to unlock Terrakion, Cobalion, and Virizion, but we go into more details on exactly how to do this in our Swords of Justice guide.

The D'artagnan of the group is practically impossible to work out on your own, so don't be afraid to check the guide to work out exactly how to catch Keldeo. We'll give you a hint: it involves a tiny island, a saucepot, and a tent. Don't worry, we've been far less cryptic in the guide.

How to catch the Galarian birds in the Crown Tundra

The Galarian birds are new forms of Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres available in Pokémon Sword and Shield. While it's very exciting getting to grips with their new designs, typings, and signature moves, the legendary birds are a bit of a hassle to actually catch.

You encounter them first at Dyna Tree Hill, but unfortunately your Rotom phone rings and scares them off. If only it was that easy, eh? Instead, you need to travel the length and breadth of the Galar region to track them down. Well, near enough. We've covered it thoroughly in our legendary birds guide, but essentially they scatter to the Crown Tundra, Wild Area, and Isle of Armor – and it's your job to track them down.

How to catch all the other legendaries in the Crown Tundra

Every other Crown Tundra legendary Pokémon is available through Dynamax Adventures. Here are all the legendary Pokémon you can encounter in the caverns:

  • Kantonian Articuno
  • Kantonian Zapdos
  • Kantonian Moltres
  • Raikou
  • Entei
  • Suicune
  • Lugia (Pokémon Shield only)
  • Ho-Oh (Pokémon Sword only)
  • Latios (Pokémon Sword only)
  • Latias (Pokémon Shield only)
  • Kyogre (Pokémon Shield only)
  • Groudon (Pokémon Sword only)
  • Rayquaza
  • Uxie
  • Mesprit
  • Azelf
  • Dialga (Pokémon Sword only)
  • Palkia (Pokémon Shield only)
  • Heatran
  • Giratina
  • Cresselia
  • Tornadus (Pokémon Sword only)
  • Thundurus (Pokémon Shield only)
  • Landorus
  • Reshiram (Pokémon Sword only)
  • Zekrom (Pokémon Shield only)
  • Kyurem
  • Xerneas (Pokémon Sword only)
  • Yveltal (Pokémon Shield only)
  • Zygarde
  • Solgaleo (Pokémon Sword only)
  • Lunala (Pokémon Shield only)
  • Tapu Koko
  • Tapu Lele
  • Tapu Bulu
  • Tapu Fini
  • Nihilego
  • Buzzwole
  • Pheromosa
  • Xurkitree
  • Celesteela
  • Kartana
  • Guzzlord
  • Stakataka
  • Blacephalon

Once you have captured five Ultra Beasts in Dynamax Adventures, you also get the opportunity to face a Poipole, which evolves into Naganadel.

Our biggest tip for completing Dynamax Adventures is to always pick the route with the best type matchups. So, if you know the legendary Pokémon at the end is a water-type (you'll always be given one of its types), pick the route with super-effective Pokémon such as electric- or grass-types. The legendary will always be the most difficult battle, so prepare accordingly with super-effective moves.

Stopping by piles of berries, scientists, and travellers to heal up, swap Pokémon, or get an item is always handy, but we'd say having a good type matchup always comes first. Our friends at The Loadout have a handy Pokémon type chart if you need to revise those details.

Other than that, consider joining with friends to take on specific legendaries in Dynamax Adventures, so you all know where you're headed. The lack of voice chat is annoying, so use Discord to discuss your options before the timer runs down. If you're playing with strangers, you'll just have to cross your fingers and hope they make sensible decisions.

There you have it, the full list of Crown Tundra legendary Pokémon. Capturing them should take you a while, but if you're all done and dusted you can check out our Crown Tundra review.
